Guadalupe (Lupe) Leon Rodriguez Ortiz
Our beautiful and wonderful eldest sister, Lupe, has left to join her Mother & Father, Francisco & Matilde Leon Rodriguez; her younger sister, Virginia Rodriguez; and her daughter Christina Ortiz, who preceded her death. Lupe passed on in the early morning hours of November 15, 2019. She lived with her daughter, Irma, in Fresno. She was a Mother to Irma, Ricou, David, Christina, Barbara and Sabina and grandmother to 21 and great grandmother to 23 children.
Lupe was born in Fresno and grew up in the small communities of Tranquility and San Joaquin, CA. She was the oldest in a family of eight sisters and brothers: Virginia, Maria, Frances, Gloria, Francisco, Jr., Ismael and Richard. She lived in the community of Calwa most of her adult life and was very active member of the Fresno Community. To mention a few: United Farm Workers, National Land for People, Westside Planning Group, founding member of Radio Bilingue and Valley Health Team.
Lupe was a single Mom at the age of 26, but was able to attain a BA in Health Science at Fresno State College by the age of 30 and used her knowledge in health field to support herself and her children. She lived in Fresno all her life and was able to purchase and maintain her home in Calwa with her experience growing up as a farm worker's daughter.
She loved gardening, especially Sago Palms and all beautifully blooming plants with which she surrounded herself. She was an animal lover and through the years rescued an innumerable number of cats, dogs, goats, pigs, geese, parakeets, goldfish and tortoise, which she found wandering down the street in front of her home one day. She was able to struggle though all her hardships because of her sense of humor and the ability to get along with others. She was a fantastic cook and there are countless stories of the great foods she prepared with her natural ability to use the right herbs and spices. She loved to bake and made countless cakes and cookies, which people gladly paid her to make.
Lupe's beautiful spirit and outgoing nature will be profoundly missed by all who knew her. She was the connection to our past and the history of our parents. Her curious mind and love of knowledge was at the core of her being and drove everything she did. When our Father tutored her at a young age of Mexico's history and culture, she absorbed it all like a sponge and learned to speak flawless Spanish. A central theme in her life was gain the knowledge of our history and culture and good education because she knew it would enrichen every aspect of our lives.
